After our amazing few days crossing the desert with the Salt Flats of Uyuni tour, we prepared to head to Chile. We had paid the transfer fee ahead of time with our trip cost. My friend and I were the only ones from our group heading to Chile, so after our final stop, we had to part ways with our new friends. After hugs and gathering our bags, we hopped into a different jeep with a new guide.
After this, we embarked on the last leg of our Salt Flats journey. In our new Jeep, we drove to the Chilean border and parked among a bunch of other vehicles doing the same thing. They parked and took our passports to get stamped. While we waited, we were offered bread, jam, cheese, hot chocolate and coffee. After eating a little, our passports were returned to us and we loaded into a bigger van.
The van then headed 10 minutes down the road where we waited for what seemed like an eternity. While waiting there, I quickly started to regret the hot chocolate I'd drank earlier. I needed a bathroom desperately. During the wait, our guide gave us customs paperwork to fill out. After forever, we drove to border control. There (after running to the bathroom), we went through customs and got our passport stamps. Then, we took our bags and had them hand searched by border patrol.
After everyone passed inspection, we loaded back into the van and drove through some more continually impressive landscapes for about a half hour. All of a sudden, we were in the middle of a small town. Our guide told us to walk down a small road to the town center, and we were off. We were right in the heart of San Pedro de Atacama, Chile.
That is the story of my journey from Bolivia to Chile. While it is short and simple, I hope it will give people an idea of what the trip entails for those considering it. As always, comments and questions are more than welcome and can be sent under the Contact Me page.
